Alice

When I am chewing on a decision, feeling stuck, mired in problems there is a part of me that wants to go in and

PUSH

FIGURE IT OUT

FIND A SOLUTION NOW

The problem with this is it doesn't really work. Or, it works in an emergency adrenaline filled situation, which is probably why I waited tables for so many years. In a moment of crisis my mind often becomes clear and the next steps are illuminated., but several things need to be at play though- including a clear goal and a limited amount of options.

But for moving in the deeper waters that guide heart and life path...that guide, in a sense, the pull of the undercurrent, my force and quick fix strategy backfires, increases stress, and actually creates crisis. In this case I need something more inclusive of the mystery. The mystery which invites in my intuitive and subconscious mind, the mystery which listens to the unknown.

This is why I dance. This is also why I write, draw, walk in nature, talk to a trusted confidant. For me these activities facilitate the conversation between the known and unknown.

I get this image; In Lewis Carrol's Alice Through the Looking Glass, every time Alice tries to walk to the garden she ends up back where she started, back in the house. Through her conversation with a rose she learns that in order to go to the garden, she must walk away from it. When we are digging deep, looking for creative solutions, inspiration, or need to shake things up, we may need to walk backwards into the garden.

I think the reason that pushing straight at the problem doesn’t work is because it adds pressure to an already dense situation.

Turning around, literally and figuratively, activating different senses, creating more space for mystery, all shifts our deeply habitual and patterned responses and thoughts.

”To inhale is to take form, to exhale is to dissolve form”  Emilie Conrad

The balance between form and formless is a tension on which art making and creative practice can come alive. The unknown pours into each forming moment. The creative pulse is impermanent, quick and vibrant, dying and leaving.
